The position is a visionary business and technology professional who maps a clear path from business requirements and challenges to sustainable, effective, and efficient information technology solutions, with a primary emphasis on infrastructure technologies and issues.  The role works with business stakeholders and IT subject matter experts to design technology-based business solutions including, but not limited to, ensuring requirements are clear and understood, working with vendors and internal IT teams to understand the products and platforms involved, designing and documenting how applications integrate with and flow through complex IT infrastructure, working with project managers and peers to detail the work required to deliver the solutions at hand, participating in developing operational support strategies for the deployed technologies, and assisting with troubleshooting and production support when necessary.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Meets with business stakeholders and/or other members of the IT team to vet end-to-end solutions that include in-house developed and/or third party applications, ensuring proposed solutions are compatible with the company’s existing technology footprint and strategy, integration points are well understood, solid infrastructure architecture is performed, infrastructure and application flow diagrams are created and accurate, project implementation and test plans are developed and understood, and the solution is documented and supportable.
  • Works with IT infrastructure and security teams to develop service and solution roadmaps, design and document infrastructure solutions, and assist with the engineering and administration of key platforms when necessary.  Participates in troubleshooting activities for complex service interruptions where knowledge of how services are designed is instrumental to service restoration.
  • Provides forward-looking strategy in close cooperation with business unit leadership by constantly evaluating and providing thought leadership on new external technologies, platforms and solutions, and how these can be leveraged to benefit business initiatives.  Works to establish and promote a concentric view of the enterprise as a whole to ensure alignment of IT strategies, minimization of risk, and supportability of all deployed technologies.
  • Stays abreast of trends in technology and the auto insurance industry and brings innovative opportunities to the business in the form of recommendations/proposals that improve customer/user satisfaction, reduce operating expenses and/or maximize revenues. Attends conferences, reads trade publications, attends webinars as appropriate.
  • Partners with internal business units, vendors, outsourced managed service providers, and other internal IT teams to ensure all IT services are efficiently delivered to meet business needs.  Actively participate in strategic planning with the IT management team to develop new and improve existing services.
  • Works with the IT security team to ensure all solutions are fully compliant with all compliance initiatives (including PCI and MAR) and in line with current company information security policies.  Proactively develop solutions with the IT security team to ensure the organization maintains effective security policies as the threat landscape evolves.
  • Actively participates in the change management process.  Regularly attends change management meetings and provides leadership in representing and reviewing proposed changes for the purpose of minimizing risk to business operations.
  • Establishes and maintains positive, professional working relationships with all PGC associates and vendors.

  • Five or more years of experience designing, deploying, and supporting technology-based business solutions including websites, transactional systems, and reporting systems, with an emphasis on infrastructure technologies and issues.
  • Solid understanding of most infrastructure technologies including, but not limited to, servers, operating systems (Linux and Windows), databases (MS SQL Server), storage (SAN and NAS), backups, data replication, hyperconverged platforms (Nutanix), virtual hypervisors (VMware and Acropolis), virtual desktops (Citrix Xen), web and application servers (Apache, Tomcat, IIS, WebLogic), Active Directory, Exchange, LAN/WAN networking including protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, OSPF, etc.), MPLS/Internet circuits, WAN Optimization, load balancers, firewalls, wireless networking, IDS/IPS, SIEM, FIM, endpoint security, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, web filtering, web browsers (Internet Explorer and Chrome), SSL certificates, DNS, DHCP, monitoring, capacity planning, SIP, QoS, and VoIP.  Knowledge of IBM iSeries (AS/400) and RPG a plus.
  • Working knowledge of application development frameworks, tools, methodologies, and best practices.  Understanding of Java development techniques, bug/enhancement request tracking software, continuous integration technologies, source code control systems, code merge principles, deployment/build techniques, and release/change management processes required.  Scripting/development abilities strongly preferred.  
  • Working knowledge of cloud technologies and interoperability/migration best practices for both technical and organizational issues including, but not limited to, DevOps/CloudOps, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Office365, Azure Active Directory, Hybrid Cloud, Content Delivery Networks (CDN), Infrastructure as Code platforms (such as Terraform), and outsourced service offerings (SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS).
  • Familiarity with common project management methodologies including Waterfall, Agile, and Scrum.
  • Proficient user of office productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven ability to navigate sensitive issues and build consensus, driving all parties to be a unified team committed to moving the organization forward. 
  • Proven ability to collaborate with all parts of the IT organization to solve problems, implement projects, sell concepts, etc. where the results are the focal point, not blame or credit.
  • Self-motivated and capable of successfully delivering assigned work on-time with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to communicate both oral and written information to all levels of an organization.
  • Proven time management, judgment, problem solving, analytical and organization skills required.
  • Conducts herself/himself in a professional manner at all times.
  • High sense of ownership of defined responsibilities, with a customer service mindset.
  • Understanding of ITIL best practices preferred.


Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical or business discipline preferred.
  • Applicable professional certifications desired.
